I spent a gorgeous August weekend in the hilltops of the Olympic Mountains at the Alpine NW photography workshop, led by Jordan Voth, Taylor McCutchan, and Noelle Johnson at beautiful Lake Crescent.
Two shoots, two very different lessons
The workshop built in two styled shoots — Brittni + Trent and Zane + Yela — and each one pushed me to think differently about how I shoot and edit. Noelle led us up mountain tops, Jordan showed us how to work with the natural landscape instead of against it, and we spent plenty of downtime playing (and Instagramming, a lot) along the shores of Lake Crescent.
What I learned about editing
Watching Jordan and Taylor edit side by side was its own education. Jordan’s approach is simple and to the point, while Taylor takes a more exploratory path, playing with different styles depending on the photo in front of her. Jordan also drove home a lesson I still carry with me: the best shots often come from the trickiest, least obvious places to stand.
A weekend of learning and adventure
