I only got a few days in Auckland, but man was it gorgeous. New Zealand has a way of making even a short visit feel like it deserves its own chapter, and Auckland’s harbors made sure of that.
Auckland sits wrapped around water on nearly every side, and that relationship with the harbor shapes everything about the city, from the skyline to the pace of daily life. I spent my short time there soaking it in, camera always within reach for the light bouncing off the water.
No trip to Auckland feels complete without a ferry ride out to Waiheke Island, and it’s easy to see why it’s become such a favorite day trip. Rolling vineyards, quiet beaches, and a slower pace made it the perfect contrast to the city I’d just left behind.
A few days was hardly enough to see it all, but between the harbors, the ferry rides, and Waiheke Island, Auckland left a lasting impression, one I’d happily return to any time.

A ferry from downtown Auckland is the easiest way to reach Waiheke Island, with the ride taking less than an hour.
Waiheke Island is known for its vineyards, beaches, and laid-back pace, making it a popular day trip from Auckland.
