Some of the best finds are the ones you almost drive past. A short trip south of Sydney, Royal National Park turned into one of my favorite coastal detours in Australia.
A quiet stretch of coastline
I pulled off at one of the park’s beaches and wandered until the crowds thinned out, and that’s when the park earned its reputation for secluded spots. Sandstone cliffs drop straight into the Pacific, and the trails along the coast make it easy to find a stretch of sand entirely to yourself.
A natural pool carved into the rocks
The real surprise was a natural pool tucked into the rocks along the shoreline — clear, calm water pooling right where the ocean meets the cliffs, completely separate from the crashing surf just beyond it. It’s the kind of spot that makes you slow down and just look for a while, camera or not.
