Some trips are perfect exactly as they are, even when they’re too short. My cousin Amy and I made the four-hour drive from Auburn, CA to Yosemite National Park and back in a single day, and even though we wished we could have stayed a lot longer, it was worth every mile.
Four hours each way is a serious commitment for a day trip, but Yosemite has a way of making the drive feel worth it before you’ve even arrived. Amy and I set out from Auburn early, ready to spend as much daylight as we could soaking in the park before turning around and making the long drive home.
Yosemite National Park and Forest is one of those places that photographs itself — towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and forest so dense and quiet it feels like its own world. We packed in as much of it as a single day would allow, and it still wasn’t enough.
One day trip to Yosemite is never really enough, and we knew that the moment we got back in the car. If a quick national park getaway is on your radar, Yosemite is proof that even a short visit is worth the drive.

It’s about a four-hour drive from Auburn, CA to Yosemite National Park, making it doable as a long day trip if you get an early start.
You can see a good amount in a single day trip, but Yosemite is big enough that most visitors — us included — leave wishing they’d planned to stay longer.
