If you tend to stay too long in relationships, romantic or platonic, well after you knew something wasn’t right anymore, you’re not alone. A lot of people who love deeply do this.
This is a gentle but honest talk about why it happens and how to start breaking the pattern. Grab a tea, take a breath, and let it land softly.
Staying is familiar. Even when a relationship hurts, you know how it works. Leaving means walking into the unknown, and that can feel like chaos. So a lot of us pick the discomfort we know, again and again, and tell ourselves it’ll get better.
Sometimes we wait so long that life makes the call for us. The friendship falls apart, the relationship ends badly, the universe burns the bridge we were too scared to walk off of ourselves. It hurts twice as much that way.
People who feel a lot tend to see someone’s potential and hold on to it. You understand why they act the way they do, so you keep making room for it. That’s a lovely trait. It just needs to come with the same amount of care for yourself.
There isn’t a trick, but a few shifts really help:
You are not broken. You are evolving. Learning to leave well is part of learning to love yourself as much as you love other people.
If a relationship feels unsafe, please reach out to someone you trust or the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Leaving safely matters more than leaving gracefully.
Usually because the familiar feels safer than the unknown, even when the familiar hurts. Hope, guilt, and the fear of being alone all play a part.
When the same “this isn’t right” feeling keeps coming back and nothing changes, even after honest conversations. Trust the thing you keep returning to.
Yes. Friendships can outlive their season just like romantic relationships, and letting one go can hurt just as much.
Remember you made the best choice you could with what you knew at the time. Being hard on yourself now only keeps you stuck in the same story.
This stuff takes time. There are more healing conversations on my YouTube channel, and I add new ones as I go.
