USS Yorktown and the Ravenel Bridge: A Charleston Photo Story
Some of my favorite Charleston photos happened before I even set foot on board. Docked at Patriots Point, the USS Yorktown (CV-10) is one of those subjects that photographs like a monument — steel, history, and scale all at once — and I couldn’t resist working the scene from outside the ship before heading in.
Framing the Yorktown against the Ravenel Bridge
From the waterfront, the Yorktown’s silhouette lines up beautifully with the Ravenel Bridge in the background, and I spent a good stretch of time chasing that pairing — weathered steel hull in the foreground, the bridge’s sweeping cables rising behind it. It’s a composition that captures two very different eras of Charleston in a single frame.
Patriotism meets a little Lowcountry nature
Together, the photos landed exactly where I’d hoped: a mix of patriotism and nature, with the Lowcountry light doing its usual magic on the water. It’s one of those Charleston spots I’d happily send any photographer back to.
