The snowshoe up to a frozen alpine lake
We strapped on snowshoes and hiked together up into the mountains above Snoqualmie, Washington, trading pavement for packed snow and quiet forest. It was a real trek, thighs burning, breath fogging in the cold, but every step felt worth it once that little alpine lake came into view, its shoreline dusted in fresh powder and completely still. By the time we reached the water, the light had gone soft and blue, and the only sound left was our own footsteps in the snow.
Why Snoqualmie is one of my favorite PNW backdrops
The Snoqualmie area is one of the most captivating corners of the Pacific Northwest, and under a heavy snowfall it becomes something else entirely. Towering evergreens bowed under fresh snow, mountain ridgelines disappeared into low cloud, and the whole landscape had this hushed, just-us quality that no studio backdrop could ever fake. I’ve photographed this area in every season, but there’s something about winter here, the way sound disappears, the way everything slows down, that makes it my favorite backdrop for a couple willing to brave the cold.
An unforgettable engagement photography experience
Kristi and Brian were an absolute joy to spend the afternoon with, game for the cold, game for the climb, game for anything I asked of them. That kind of easy, up-for-it energy is what turns a hike into a genuinely fun engagement session, and it shows in every frame: real laughter, real closeness, snow catching in her hair. We took our time picking our way along the shoreline, chasing the best light and letting Kristi and Brian just be themselves rather than posing for the camera.
