Every so often the roles flip, and instead of standing behind the camera I get to be the one in front of it. This stroll through Charleston with the talented Nicole Mickle of Nicole Mickle Photography was exactly that kind of afternoon.
Trading the camera for a moment
Nicole is such a lovely soul, and she has this easy, unhurried way of working that makes you forget there’s a lens pointed at you at all. We wandered the cobblestone streets and shaded courtyards of downtown Charleston, ducking into doorways and gardens as the light shifted through the afternoon.
Learning to actually smile on camera
I’ll be honest: this is the first set of photos where I actually tried to smile instead of hiding behind a more guarded expression. It felt awkward at first – old habits die hard when you spend most of your life on the other side of the shutter – but somewhere between the iron gates and the pastel row houses, it started to feel normal.
If you’re a photographer who never lets yourself be photographed, I get it. But there’s something worth doing about handing over the trust for an afternoon, especially when it’s with someone as warm as Nicole. If you’re ever in Charleston and want a portrait session that feels more like a walk with a friend than a photoshoot, I can’t recommend her enough.
