I spent five days in the heart of Times Square with my cousin and my uncle, packing in just about everything New York City has to offer. It’s the kind of trip that reminds you why they call it the city that never sleeps.
Times Square was home base for the trip, that endless wash of lights and crowds that somehow never gets old no matter how many times you’ve seen it in photos. Starting and ending each day there set the tone for a trip built on go-go-go energy.
Some of my favorite frames came from getting above the streets entirely. We took a helicopter ride around the city and the Statue of Liberty, and made our way to the top of the Empire State Building for a skyline view that puts the whole scale of Manhattan into perspective. There’s nothing quite like seeing a city you’ve only ever walked through from a completely different angle.
The rest of the trip was a blur of everything New York does best: the Met, the Museum of Natural History, an afternoon in Central Park, wandering Little Italy and SOHO, and even a carriage ride through the city at 1 a.m. We filled the days with streets, restaurants, bars, and shops, the kind of trip where you say yes to almost everything.
Five days wasn’t nearly enough, but it was enough to fall for New York City all over again.

Five days is enough to hit the highlights — Times Square, Central Park, a few museums, and an iconic view from above — though you could easily spend weeks exploring.
A helicopter tour or a trip to the top of the Empire State Building both offer incredible, very different perspectives on the Manhattan skyline.
