We were on our way to a friend dinner at Mad River when downtown Charleston handed us one of those days you can’t plan for. We got there thirty minutes early just to wander as tourists, and it turned out to be the best decision of the day.
Fog on the water
There was a cruise ship in town, and a thick, low fog sitting right on the water – shallow, dreamy, and completely unexpected. It’s the kind of light and atmosphere you can chase for years and rarely catch, and there it was, waiting for us on an ordinary walk to dinner.

We hadn’t planned to shoot anything that evening – this was supposed to be a simple stroll before a meal – but I couldn’t resist.
