Chief Mukuni Village, Zambia: A Visit With USC Classmates
Some trips change the way you see everyday life, and my visit to Chief Mukuni Village outside Livingstone, Zambia, did exactly that. I went with a group of my USC classmates, and what started as an afternoon stop turned into one of the most memorable parts of the whole Africa trip.
Meeting the village, one family at a time
Chief Mukuni Village sits near Livingstone, and walking through it with our hosts gave us a real look at how families there live day to day. We got to see the compounds up close, browse crafts made by hand right there in the village, and buy a few pieces to bring home. Mostly, though, we ended up hanging out with the kids, who were some of the cutest, most curious people I met on the whole trip.
A day built around self-sufficiency
What struck me most was how self-sufficient each family compound is. They raise goats and chickens for food, keep gardens growing, and hang laundry to dry between the huts. Sleeping huts and cooking huts are kept separate, a practical layout passed down through generations. They even sprout their own seeds to make yeast for homemade beer, a small detail that says a lot about how resourceful daily life is here.
