Grand Tetons Women’s Retreat: Five Days Around Jackson Hole and Yellowstone
Every year I help lead a small women’s retreat somewhere wild. In 2024 that meant five days road-tripping through Jackson Hole and Yellowstone, and I still catch myself thinking about it.
Yellowstone does something to your sense of scale. The land just keeps going, and the geysers go off on their own schedule whether anyone is watching or not. We slowed way down. Some afternoons we sat on the trail and sketched, which sounds precious until you actually do it and realize you haven’t looked at anything that closely in years. At night we went back to our geodome cabins. It took about one evening for them to feel like ours.

One day we rode through the valley with the Tetons off in the distance, nobody saying much. That same night we ended up at a local cowboy bar and stayed until our feet gave out. No one planned that part, which is usually how the best nights go.
Hot springs, campfires, and the people you meet
We found hot springs almost by accident and soaked while the air turned cold around us. Every night came back to a fire. That is when people tend to stop performing and start telling you the truth about their lives, and this group did.
I photograph these trips, but I spend half of each one just glad to be there. This crew was funny and up for anything, and I would go back with them tomorrow.
